Crafting with Heart: Honouring Loved Ones with Marie Curie Beads
At Blake’s Makes, every product has a story, and some stories are especially close to my heart. Among the jewellery pieces I make, there’s one line that holds a deeply personal meaning for me—my recycled paper beads crafted from Marie Curie flyers. These aren’t just beads; they’re a tribute to the incredible support my family and I received from Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth.
A Personal Journey
In December 2013, we lost my dad to cancer after a courageous three-year battle with stage 4 bowel cancer, which had spread throughout his body. Through his illness, Marie Curie Hospice provided more than just medical support—they gave us compassion, comfort, and a sense of peace during a time of unimaginable difficulty. They helped us make the most of the precious time we had left together, giving him the care he needed while also supporting our family through each moment.
Creating beads from Marie Curie flyers allows me to honour my dad’s memory and give back to a charity that means the world to me. I sell these special pieces at craft fairs, and a percentage of each sale goes directly into a Marie Curie collection tin. It’s my way of saying “thank you” and supporting others who are facing the same journey my family went through. In fact, any jewellery I make from charity flyers has its proceeds donated to Marie Curie.
